What Made the Cut
Six products sold for the sun, judged on their labels. One is upheld. One makes a conditional cut. Three can't yet be verified as broad spectrum, or carry no SPF number at all. One isn't a sunscreen. Start with the label: “Broad Spectrum SPF 30” or higher is preferred, with a water-resistance time if you swim or sweat. A lower SPF is judged case by case.

The routine that makes the cut
- Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ on face, neck, ears, hands
- Reapply about every 2 hours outdoors, and after swimming or sweating
- Hat, sunglasses, protective clothing
- Cleanse sunscreen off properly
- Moisturizer
The Claim
Sun care is sold on texture, glow, and lifestyle. Meanwhile the Drug Facts box quietly carries the claims that matter: broad spectrum, the SPF number, and a water-resistance time of 40 or 80 minutes.
Read these with suspicion:
- “All-day” protection from one application
- SPF in makeup as your only sunscreen
- Mole-checking apps marketed as a substitute for an exam

The Evidence
This page is information, not medical advice. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, shade, hats, and protective clothing are the basics. If you notice a mole or spot that is new, changing, itching, or bleeding, or that looks different from your others, book a dermatologist. Apps and online checkers are not a diagnosis.
What a label can credibly support:
- “Broad spectrum” on the label
- SPF 30 or higher
- Water resistance (40 or 80 minutes) for outdoor days
- A texture you'll actually wear every day
Source: the US sunscreen labeling rule, 21 CFR 201.327, sets the terms “broad spectrum” and water resistant (40 or 80 minutes).
